Debate Part 2

by - 8:19 PM

As I've said in the previous post, we've made it into the third round.

The third motion is : Science is a threat to humanity. We were going against SMK Datok Lokman. We drew lots and we got Government - the side that agrees with the motion.

Initially, we were kind of scared because there are SO many points you can use against us in this motion. Because Science is such a wide topic and it has done so much, there is SO many things you can say, there is SO many ways you can use it against each other. Science is basically quite a controversial topic, especially in the ways of the religious.

So anyway, we prepared for it anyway. What I can say is that we spent most of our time thinking up the contentions and our stand. We have our contentions, but how to call it? And then we had to prepare Hani for her part of the debate (can't really blame her that she doesn't have enough time to brush up on her English, but I really hope she improves her grammar and pronunciation.) and I was thinking up of the things they could use against us so we're prepared for it.

Time for the debate. It was in the library and we were surprised to see so many people showing up. In the last two debates, the audience only consisted of the reserves from both schools and their teachers. In the library, we saw the SAB students, the Datok Lokman reserves and students from some other school. And the fact is - all of them are friends. They all somehow know each other. Me and Pillai felt so inferior.

Okay, basically, the debate was quite entertaining. The speakers from Datok Lokman were seemingly very confident about the debate. I don't know, I just get this feeling that they're not taking it seriously because we're from Seri Mutiara, some school no one has ever heard of. Plus, we're new comers!

The opposition did not state their ultimate definition. They only defined Science. What about Threat? What about Humanity? What does the motion mean? Moreover, they were aggressive and to be honest, taunting. But that's okay, because well, we're in a debate and you do what you can and what you have to. Me and Pillai we were sitting among the audience huddled together like two worried Moms who just realised they send their kids to a bunch of barracudas. Until Kevin called it and said that the opposition were only talking about the benefits of Science, not how it is a threat to humanity. And since they didn't give a full definition of the motion, they couldn't really defend themselves on that part.

But the debate was okay. I understand that we both want to win, so some aggresion and some friction will happen. What really fucking annoyed me was the boy sitting behind of us. That boy is the biggest fucking asshole I have ever had the good luck to not see. When Kevin was all "Why is Science a threat to humanity?" the boy was all, "your brain."

As if that wasn't enough. He actually told the girl sitting beside him to buy some eggs so they can throw them at us. And they knew me and Pillai heard them. They came closer.

Hello, boy. This is a competition. The nation doesn't sink because either party loses. I felt like turning around and castrating him right there and then. But I didn't, because civilized people like me don't sink to low levels like that jerkface.

But in the end, we won the third round.
I hope that boy feels foolish about himself. I hope he changes for the better in being an overall person, especially in competitions. I really hope he does. Malaysia doesn't need scumbag attitudes like that.
The adjudicator felt that the opposition did a bad job at doing what they're supposed to do - opposing us. She pointed out some points that the opposing team could use against us. Fortunately for us, they didn't notice them.

The fourth round we were afraid of. Not only are we going against a school widely known for their achievements in almost everything, we were not prepared at all for the fourth motion. It was so hard to find anything for it because you basically can't when they already gave you the answer in the motion. It's quite hard to interpret correctly, or rather, quite hard to pin point what the adjudicators want from us on the motion.

Drawing lots, we were lucky. We got government and thankfully, we had some points. The motion was: Negligent parents legally liable in cases of child abduction.

Quarantine was quite a scene. We were racking our brains to think of some contentions for the motion. All of us, we were pissing in our pants cos our opponents are from SAB. They were busy thinking of contentions and a good stand, while I kept bombarding them with "what if they ask"s cos being cynical is being me.

Then, the actual debate happened in the hall. God, we were scared. We had no one supporting us. We had no one rooting for our team. Everyone was friends with the debaters from SAB.

Okay, I am now rewriting the post. My Internet crashed and the original post wasn't saved, so I'm just going to say..

We got second place! The very fact that we actually made it into the finals was surprising for us. We went up the stage to get our trophy with pride.

The adjudicator came and told us what we should improve on. And generally, she didn't say much about points. She just stressed on our confidence and style and language. Which basically means our language pulled us down, so SAB won -.- which means our points were good. Which if you ask me, is completely true. Even SAB's own students agreed. I heard them say it. Our points were strong, and relevant.

I suppose if SAB won it would've been bad for their name. But whatever. Getting second place is quite good also. And it is also announced that we're going for the state level competition! :D

Best of luck to us ;)
